Pass The Potatoes, Please

A listener sent us this dilemma:

I’ve been with my boyfriend for just over six months and every two weeks we go to his parents for Sunday dinner. It’s a very different scenario from what I’m used to. My family spends an hour or so having a slow meal and having conversations. His family don’t say much more than “pass the potatoes, please” and eat quickly. I’ve tried to speed up my eating but it’s doesn’t come natural to me and everyone else at the table ends up waiting on me.

How should I solve this politely? Do I leave food on the plate while I’m still hungry or should I tell them my family are slow eaters?
