Popular Marathon Hanging Up Its Shoes For This Year

Most events have been cancelled for the foreseeable future due to COVID-19 and the restrictions that have been mandated, and the Nova Scotia Marathon is no exception.

The marathon is one of the latest events to announce they are postponing until 2021. The run is the biggest community event of the year which is celebrating 50 years this July. Organizers had hoped to have a big celebration on race day July 26 but are already looking forward to holding it next year instead.

Misty James, Director of Recreation for the Municipality of the District of Barrington, says that the event which has runners come from as far away as Japan will really be missed this year.

“The runners are really feeling the impact of this so if you see them out their running in their neighbourhood give a honk or a wave and support them,” she said.

Another big factor in the decision was the economic impact the pandemic has had on Barrington, which is a lobster fishing community.

“Sponsorship wise, it’s hard to ask the community which is already struggling to even support this event, and community support is huge, everyone is really involved and supportive of it,” she said.

The run usually starts out from Sherose Island and heads over to Cape Sable Island where most of the race takes place. Registrants can choose both 10k and 6k routes or even join in on a virtual run, which has also been postponed because it would be difficult for local runners to participate
