New childcare spaces are coming to the South Shore.
The province and feds are funding $2.7 million for 129 spaces in Bridgewater, Lunenburg, Liverpool and more.
Education Minister Becky Druhan says finding childcare has been a challenge for the sector for decades.
“Even when my children were young, we were on multiple wait-lists, and had to wait a long time to find spaces. This is something that’s been a need for a long time, especially in this area,” said Druhan.
She says it’s particularly important in rural areas, where they weren’t available in the past.
Druhan says reducing childcare costs and the compensation package for ECEs have also helped the sector move forward.
“We reduced the fees by half last year, and it’s helped numerous folks. We’ve reduced it by hundreds of dollars a month.”
The funding includes eight new infant spaces at the YMCA of Southwest Nova Scotia Child Care Centre in Bridgewater.
