The Astor Theatre may soon benefit from a modern climate control system as part of a broader renovation plan.
The Region of Queens Municipality has hired Halifax-based DSRA Architecture to assess the historic venue and develop a modernization strategy. Over the next six weeks, the firm will evaluate the building’s condition and identify upgrades needed to improve comfort and accessibility for patrons and performers.
A key focus of the review is the potential installation of a central HVAC system. The lack of air conditioning has long been a challenge for the theatre, especially during the summer months when indoor temperatures can become uncomfortably high.
The architects will also examine what changes are required to bring the facility in line with upcoming updates to Nova Scotia’s accessibility legislation.
During recent council discussions, members emphasized the need for a clear roadmap outlining required upgrades, associated costs and timelines for implementation.
Coun. Stewart Jenkins said he hopes the municipality will develop a five-year plan to guide the renovations. He believes revitalizing the theatre could help generate revenue to offset the cost of improvements.
The building is owned by the Region of Queens and leased to the Astor Theatre Society, which manages day-to-day operations.
DSRA is expected to present its findings to council later this fall, after which next steps will be determined.
