Plans for a new Library to serve Queens County in Liverpool are once again being setback over where the new location will be.
The Library Steering Committee which was formed by council to help oversee the development was tasked with suggesting a location earlier in the year. Based on consultations with stakeholders and community members they recommended a site at Queens Place Emera Centre.
Council however did not agree with that site, voting it down 5-3 when the matter came before them.
On Tuesday, Council held a special meeting to get the project moving forward again and find a new site.
Councilor Maddie Charlton tried to present a motion that would allow for the Library Steering Committee to recommend an alternative location but there was a heated debate around how the motion should specifically be worded.
At one point Charlton said, “I would just like to ask how I should word this motion given that the last one was defeated and it needs to be reworded, our CAO can give a recommendation on how I need to word it, this is getting ridiculous.”.
Mayor Darlene Norman responded saying they would need to change the terms of reference.
Ultimately Charlton put forward the motion, “The Steering Committee present a second choice location to council,” which passed unanimously.
The committee will now search for an alternate site and council suggested if the alternative site required more money than budgeted for the project they would need to meet again to authorize further spending.
