The Region of Queens will not impose an area tax rate hike to help a financially strapped community hall in the municipality.
The proposal to raise taxes for residents in District 7 was unanimously defeated by councillors at a meeting on Tuesday, March 23.
Mayor Darlene Norman says council’s decision reflects the voice of the people.
“While many members of Council spoke in support of the positive contribution that community halls make in communities, the fact is the area rate vote was overwhelmingly against this tax increase,” stated Norman in a media release. “The defeat of the motion was a reflection of the voice of the people who would be affected.”
Residents of the Beach Meadows area overwhelmingly voted against the idea of a four cent tax increase to help the Seaside Community Centre.
A total of 223 residents voted on the matter earlier this month and 192 voted “no”. The vote was not binding which led to the issue coming back to the council table.
District 7 represents people living in Beach Meadows, Eagle Head, East Berlin, West Berlin, and Port Medway.
