RCMP upgrade charge to second-degree murder in Mill Village case

RCMP have upgraded charges following a violent incident in Mill Village that led to the death of an 84-year-old man.

Police say they responded to a weapons call at a home on Highway 3 in the early hours of March 28. When officers arrived, they found the man with life-threatening injuries consistent with being stabbed. He was taken to hospital by paramedics.

Another man had left the scene before police arrived but was arrested without incident later that morning at a home in Vogler’s Cove. He was initially charged with Attempt to Commit Murder and held in custody.

The victim remained in hospital until April 11, when he died from his injuries. The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled the death a homicide, connected to intimate partner violence.

The Southwest Nova Major Crime Unit has since taken over the investigation. On April 22, the charge was upgraded to Second-Degree Murder. The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Bridgewater Provincial Court on May 15.

RCMP are reminding Nova Scotians that help is available for anyone experiencing or at risk of intimate partner violence. Support can be accessed anonymously by dialing 211, calling 1-855-225-0220, or visiting ns.211.ca.
