Residents of two local municipalities can have a say in what they think their elected officials should be paid.
The towns of Bridgewater and Lunenburg have both asked for applications from those willing to help set councillors and mayor’s wages.
This is the first year the Town of Lunenburg has made the request while it has been standard practice in Bridgewater for some time.
Lunenburg Mayor Rachel Bailey says council wanted to remove barriers for people to enter municipal politics.
“I think it is opportune, that with an election on the horizon [in October 2020] this is something that maybe gets a little higher profile as people might consider running for office and they want to know more completely what’s involved with that.”
Bridgewater CAO Tammy Crowder says their policy dictates a review must take place at least six months out from a municipal election.
“It warrants a review. It doesn’t mean that there will be change, but it should be looked at. It’s healthy to ensure that the remuneration given to councillors is reflective of municipal government in Nova Scotia and what other municipal units are considering.”
