Police are warning residents to be weary of strange calls from family members asking for money.
On Feb. 6, Lunenburg County RCMP received two complaints from Bridgewater residents who received phone calls from someone claiming to be a family member and asking for money due to an emergency.
The callers claimed they had been in a car accident and needed bail money to get out of jail, and were able to share a lot of personal information about the victims over the phone, including name, age, address and how they were related.
Police say the callers also stated they suffered facial injuries in a bid to keep the victims from questioning their different voice.
The scam also involves someone posing as a legal representative who requests money for a similar situation.
Police say anyone who receives these calls should not send money, and instead try and contact the family member themselves afterwards.
They also ask victims to report the calls to their local police, Crime Stoppers and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
An investigation into these calls is ongoing.
