Infants under eight months can now get protection for free from the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
In a news release, Thursday, the province says the program will be offered every year during RSV season from late fall to spring – Wednesday, October 15 to April 30, 2026.
Before being discharged from the hospital, newborns will be offered their first dose.
Other babies who are eligible, are able to receive a dose from their family doctor or public health.
“The monoclonal antibody protection for infants provides strong and instant protection against RSV. So, when baby leaves the hospital to come home, they have a good defence,” said Michelle Thompson, Minister of Health and Wellness.
RSV is a common respiratory virus that can lead to severe complications like bronchiolitis and pneumonia, particularly in infants and older adults.
In September, Nova Scotia began offering the vaccine to those aged 75 and older.
