The Mahone Bay Museum is looking to improve its small exhibit on rum running.
The museum is looking to the public to provide local stories about rum running in the Mahone Bay area to include in their display.
Manager and Curator, Lyne Allain, says names don’t have to be included if people are a bit shy of telling their family history.
“I’ve definitely already heard a few stories that involved them running from police and hiding the alcohol in their houses. It was illegal and I guess some people are just a little bit nervous to admit to the fact that their families were doing something illegal.”
Rum running is part of Mahone Bay’s history dating back to the early 1920s during prohibition.
“Hiding alcohol in Mahone Bay underneath some of the buildings that are along the waterfront and in a hearse that went through Mahone Bay. They put it in the hearse so the police wouldn’t look in there. Those are kind of the stories we’re looking for.”
Allain says anyone who is interested in sharing their rum-running stories can contact the museum by email at info@mahonebaymuseum.com or call them at (902) 624-6263.
