Salmon farm expansion in Liverpool Bay gets greenlight

A salmon farm in Liverpool Bay has been approved for expansion following a decision by the Nova Scotia Aquaculture Review Board.

Kelly Cove Salmon will be allowed to add six cages at its site near Coffin Island, increasing the total number of cages to 20.

The company has operated the farm since 2011.

The approval follows a public hearing held in October that included submissions from multiple stakeholders.

In its written decision, the review board concluded the amendment is not expected to create significant negative effects on navigation, nearby fisheries, or the local wild salmon population.

The board also determined the surrounding waters remain suitable for aquaculture and that the operation contributes to local and provincial economic activity.

Kelly Cove says the expansion will include updated containment systems and underwater monitoring technology designed to track fish health and farm conditions in real time.

The company is owned by Cooke Aquaculture.
