Shelburne Arena receives funding for new roof

A new roof could be coming for the Shelburne Arena sooner than expected.

The province announced 300-thousand dollars for the project last week.

Shelburne Mayor Harold Locke says it was a pleasant surprise.

“Now we think we might be able to replace the entire roof with a new one. That was recommended some time ago. It would put the building back in very good condition,” said Mayor Locke.

The chiller that makes the ice had mechanical issues before last season started, and the government gave 100-thousand dollars to help fix it.

Mayor Locke knows the arena is an important part of the community.

“We have figure skating and minor hockey there, and our public skates have been very popular. The business community has stepped up and sponsored those. We’ve had over 100 people at a time take part in the skates, so it’s been very successful.”

He hopes to have the roof done before the start of next season.
