Shelburne County Fire Department Facing Predicament

The Sable River Volunteer Fire Department has problem. Two actually.

They need to raise nearly $300,000 for a pumper to replace a 32-year old vehicle that had to be taken off the road after failing inspection.

But Sable River fire chief Todd Sisk says even if they get a new truck, there’s another issue.

“Any modern truck wouldn’t fit in our hall. Back when they built this fire hall it was made for the trucks we had an unfortunately truck have gotten bigger.”

They are currently using one loaned to them by the Eel Brook and District Fire Department.

The Municipality of the District of Shelburne currently doesn’t have anything in place for capital funding for fire departments but is drafting a new policy.

Sisk says he’s looking into any provincial or federal funding that might be available.

He says they made about two-thousand dollars in profit from last weekend’s Fun Fest and are planning other activities to raise money.

Sisk says they just want a basic pumper that will do the job with no frills.
