Signs Of Spring

It’s that time of year. Spring is about to arrive. And I’m about ready for it.

I like to amuse myself this time of year but looking for signs of the season that is approaching. It’s not so easy with all seasons, but spring brings changes that I tend to welcome.

I spotted a clump of snow drops on the lawn the other day. Usually one of the first flowering plants to brave the new season. The tend to end up getting buried by snow fairly often. But I admire them for their optimism, if nothing else.

But so far, I haven’t noticed much else starting to sprout. I’m sure it will all kick in fairly soon.

The birds seem a bit more excited every morning. I hear them, happily chirping away. Since, with a number of birds, their singing ability is directly tied to their dating prospects, it’s serious business for them. All I can say is, I’m glad I’m not a bird. My singing isn’t that good.

I’ve also been listening for peepers. Nothing yet on that front, so little frogs must be still safely tucked in their beds for the time being. It won’t be long before they are awake, I’m sure.

But I did spot what must be considered a sure sign of spring. Pickleball. Now you might think pickleball is a year round thing. It happens in gyms all over the place. But it is not a year round outdoor sport in these parts. And yesterday, I saw people playing pickleball outdoors.

I’m sure there will still be some days where pickleball players will remain inside, but yesterday was not one of them. So I take that as a very hopeful sign.

I guess I have to add this to my signs of spring. Certain types of birds return. Peepers start to peep. And pickleball players shed their parkas and take to the courts.

Spring is on the way.
