So Many Apples…

The time of year has come. In some ways I hate to put summer behind me, but like it or not, fall starts tomorrow. Fall does have a lot going for it. Not least of which is apples.

I like apples. Especially nice fresh apples. And all of them seem to have something good about them. But some I like better than others.

I have long been a fan of the Cortland. I like the tart flavour. And the honey crisp. But there are so many good varieties to be tried out there.

A person almost needs their own orchard with two of each tree. And specially trained bees, so that you don’t get too much cross pollination. You may also need to build little walls around them to keep the wind from blowing random pollen around. That way you could just walk out in the morning with your tree map and pick the variety you would like to try that day. But that seems like it might be a lot of work.

Instead, I’ll just drop by and pick up a few apples, trying to find a few different ones to try as they become available.

I have been hoping to try the cosmic crisp. It’s a combination of a honey crisp and an enterprise, from what I understand. I’m not sure if anyone is growing them in this part of the world yet. They were released in 2019, after spending twenty years being developed in Washington State. So I suspect it might take a bit more time to make it here.

And then there’s a few heritage breeds I have long been a fan of. Like the russet. I swear someone took a russet, combined it with something else and they pack those up and just call them russets. I like the hard, almost furry ones that feel like you are about to break your teeth when you bite into one. They’re hard to find, but you can come across them if you look.

But that’s one of the things I like about living n this area. The seasons are fairly defined, quite often fairly distinct, by the types of foods they produce. Really, there should be more than just four seasons. There should be strawberry season, hodge podge season, blueberry season, apple season… There really needs top be more than just four.

In the meantime, I’ll just keep sub-dividing the seasons we’re given into the ones the really matter. It’s apple season. Cranberry season is on the way. And we can’t forget lobster season.

But back to apple season. Hand me one of those pink lady’s. I haven’t had one of those yet this year.
