A group of South Shore residents are bringing the Christmas cheer to seniors suffering hard times.
The Santa’s for South Shore Seniors are rounding up seniors who are poverty stricken and in need, and pairs them with a secret Santa to get them whatever they need for Christmas.
Shannon Stewart created the group last year after hearing of a similar one in the HRM and seeing the struggle some seniors go through when they need help.
“Its not easy for some to ask for help,” she said.
“Its not easy for anyone to ask for help, let alone someone in their 70’s or 80′. They’re very humbled and thankful.”
This is the second year the group has helped adopt a number of seniors into their secret Santa program.
The group works and communicates through their Facebook page, which lists seniors in need for members to adopt as their secret Santa recipient.
Stewart said there is an incredible need of support for seniors, especially during the holiday season.
“There was an article that I had seen, they said 21 per cent of the seniors in Lunenburg County, were living in poverty of on the brink of poverty.” she said.
“That number just really blew my mind.”
She says this year, they have more than 80 seniors they are trying to help, and are still looking for Secret Santas and volunteers.
Those interested in volunteering or providing a gift for a senior in need can join the Santas for South Shore Seniors Facebook page.
