According to the calendar, today is the first day of spring. Although not the first full day of spring. That would have to be tomorrow. Even though we haven’t had a lot of winter weather this year, spring doesn’t seem to be in a hurry.
Officially, spring arrives at 6:24 PM this evening. Doesn’t give you a lot of time to celebrate the season while the son id still up, but that’s when it officially happens. So while today marks the first day of spring, the first full day is tomorrow.
It almost seemed rather spring like over the past few days, with the snow, what little we had around for the past week or so, melting away rather quickly. I won’t say we won’t get more before the season truly settles in. Remember where we live. It could happen at any time. But it is starting to look a bit spring like when it comes to the weather.
And the other day, as the snow melted away from the front lawn, I noticed a small patch of snowdrops starting to bloom. Or try to.
This is sort of a rogue patch of snowdrops. I don’t believe they were ever planted there. It started out with one or two flowers a few years ago and has slowly moved toward clump status. Although really, it has a ways to go to be a clump. It’s sort of a half dozen little blooms that pop up every year around this time, gamely trying to welcome spring and not snowed on. Although it usually happens that they get snowed on, but they continue to try to bring on spring.
I really don’t remember having snowdrops in any garden, so I’m not sure where they came from. But the one little patch continues to do it’s best. You kind of have to admire it.
But that’s the one sign of spring I have seen so far. Well, the birds do seem to be singing a bit louder and perhaps with a bit more urgency, since mating season is fast approaching. I haven’t seen any of them trying to build nests yet, but you know it won’t be long.
So welcome to spring. I hope it settles in and gets comfortable. Maybe not invite winter back for too many visits.
