Still On The List

Another solstice and I have yet to get to Stonehenge. It’s just one of those things I’d like to do.

Although I don’t, expect anything truly magical to happen. I don’t expect to be suddenly gifted with all the collected knowledge of past. I don’t expect to be given any powers of the Druids. I’d just like to see Stonehenge. And if you’re going to go to Stonehenge, why not make it on the solstice, just to see all the others who gather there.

The last two years, you could be there virtually. That was the only way to be there. And you can still check out what is happening online, if you are not inclined to travel across the ocean to check out a pile of old rocks.

But it is one of those things I have always wanted to see. So why go when there’s nothing but rocks? Might as well be there while there is a bunch of people hanging around, just for the fun of it.

Apparently there were about eight thousand people at the site today, all celebrating the solstice in some way. I just think it would be interesting to watch the Druids and the pagans and the simply curious stand around and watch the sun rise.

Stonehenge is one of those places that has an interesting history, even if no one is quite sure what that history is. Someone, for some reason, lugged a bunch of really big rocks for a long distance to put them there. Maybe some day we will figure out why, but the speculation is part of the fun. The big circle of stones may have some relation to the solstice. Or it may not. These days, we only think we know. And what we know seems to change every so often.

But for now, it remains on my bucket list. Just one of those things that maybe… someday… I’ll get to experience.

And really, I don’t want to cross all those things off my list too soon. It gives me something to look forward to.
