Tax Deadline Day For Most Canadians

Some Canadians may be left doing a bit of last-minute scrambling on Friday.

It is deadline day for most people to file their 2020 personal income tax returns.

The exception is self-employed Canadians, who have until June 15 to do so.

But everyone must pay any taxes owing by Friday to avoid penalties and interest.

The Canada Revenue Agency says the filing deadline is especially important if you are seeking COVID benefits as they must verify income to confirm that you are eligible.

If your total taxable income last year was $75,000 or less and you received at least one COVID-19 benefit, you will automatically receive interest relief on your 2020 taxes owing until April 30, 2022, once you file your return.

But the agency said you should still apply on time since late-filing penalties will still apply if you file after April 30.
