Fishing season gets underway tomorrow. Not that I have it circled on the calendar or anything. Or that I’m really looking forward to it. But, maybe I am. Just a bit
I’ve been getting phone calls and messages all week from friends, reminding me of opening day. Also telling me what new gear they have managed to find, or that places have bait in stock. Any number of things about fishing.
Truth be told, I usually don’t pay a lot of attention the first couple weeks of the season. Don’t get me wrong, I love fishing, but my interest in fishing is tempered somewhat by my interest in not freezing my butt off. While I do know of a couple nice sheltered spots that might be worth checking out, I may wait until things warm up just a bit more.
I know there are people who can’t wait for the first day of the season. People who have been fishing all winter in those few lakes that are still open. These people will be posting pictures of their catches online, making me feel like I’m missing out. But I will try to remain calm and not get too excited about one of my favourite times of year.
There have been many times I have headed out at the beginning of April. Desperately trying to keep bait from freezing, looking for spots top find shelter from the snow squalls, knocking the ice out of the guides on my fishing rod so you at least have a chance to make a cast. While I enjoy getting out, it’s memories such as these that keep me from wanting to freeze body parts I would rather not have frozen.
So I will wait for a few days. Maybe a couple weeks. Instead, I will take the time to inspect my boat and my fishing gear. Make sure one more time that everything is ready for the coming season.
Although… the forecast for Sunday really doesn’t look too bad.
