I’ve always tried to be a “green” person as far as not wasting resources and it dovetails nicely with my “cheap” side.
For example, I save any condiment packets from restaurants – put them in the fridge and if we run low on mustard, ketchup or vinegar I’ve got the packets to tide me over until the next grocery store trip.
I rarely buy a coffee at a drive through – partly because I arrive at work before most of them open for business – so I bring my own ziploc bag of ground coffee and brew it up at work.
And I wash and reuse the Ziplocs until they fall apart.
The odd time I get a fancy coffee or tea at the drive through, if I don’t drink it all it goes in the fridge and gets microwaved the next day. (Now that is cheap!)
But according to my family the cheapest thing I do is refuse to buy a car with air conditioning. My rationale is that we live on the coast in Nova Scotia and A/C in the car is needed maybe 3 days a year, and only when stuck in traffic because of road construction. You wouldn’t believe the grief I take from my wife over that, as she drives her formerly air conditioned car for the last two years – I say formerly because the A/C broke and it’s a thousand dollars to fix.
What’s the most sensible frugality (cheapest) thing you do?
