The Dragonfly Diaries – Part 2

So I bought a dragonfly and pinned it on my hat, since that was the style in those days. Okay, Grandpa Simpson, I’m not. And wearing a dragonfly is not exactly high style, but I was wondering if it would work.

I mentioned buying the dragonfly last week. A lot of people were saying they were great at keeping other bugs at bay. Others were saying they didn’t work. I had to try for myself.

So with dragonfly securely attached to my hat, I set out for my usual morning walk with the dog. It was not real early, but still just a touch on the cool side. If you are doing any walking you pretty much have to go early or late at the moment. It tends to get a might toasty during most of the day.

But would my simple little dragonfly be enough to protect me from the buzzing hordes? That was the question.

The hordes still buzzed. There were plenty of deer flies hanging around. Buzzing around actually. The dragonfly did not stop them from buzzing. So if you were hoping for a nice, peaceful, quiet walk with no buzzing, the dragonfly won’t make that happen. But they didn’t seem quite as willing to land.

I was not spending time hauling them out of my hair. A few landed, but it didn’t seem to be the tooth first dive bombing that I had experienced the week before. They seemed a bit more tentative.

Having the dragonfly on my hat did not seem to keep them far away, but it did seem to be a small deterrent. They didn’t seem to be terrified of the dragonfly, but they didn’t seem comfortable with it either.

So the jury is still out. I have not really decided if the dragonfly pin really works or not, although it did seem to help a bit. Hard to say whether it was real, or just that I was expecting some sort of result.

And we are dealing with deer flies. Not the brightest of the flies, but certainly one that is determined to leave with a piece of you, and that determination was foiled.

I suspect the only way to keep them from coming around would be to replace the dragonfly with an actual dragon that would fry all flies in the area, but that doesn’t seem practical. Dragons are hard to come by and burning all flies is a little excessive, particularly given the current fire hazard.

For now, I will continue with the experiment. I have reached no conclusions yet. And the dragonfly is quite stylish.
