I’ve been wearing a dragonfly pin on my hat for a couple weekends now. I’m still not convinced it will keep all other larger flies away, but it does seem to make them a bit more wary.
The thing it, I know I was bitten over the weekend. I’m just not sure when.
I didn’t notice at the time. However I later noticed my ear was a bit itchy and swollen and seemed to have been bitten by something, most likely a deer fly. But since I can’t say for sure exactly when it happened, I can’t say if I was actually wearing the dragonfly at the time. I may have taken my hat off for a few minutes and a hungry fly took advantage. Or perhaps he was brave and flew in beneath the dragonfly’s line of site.
But I can’t blame the dragonfly for not doing it’s job, since I’m not sure it was actually on the job at the time. So the jury is still out of the effectiveness of wearing a dragonfly pin.
Once again this week, it didn’t stop them from buzzing around. But they didn’t seen in a hurry to swoop in for a bite. Except for that one.
But I’m not sure they don’t attract other dragonflies. There seemed to be a couple hanging around quite a bit, which really seemed to keep the horse flies and deer flies away. If one dragonfly works, two or three will certainly keep them away.
Although there was one who seemed quite taken with my dragonfly pin. He seemed to think they would make beautiful little dragonflies together. The pin didn’t take his advances too seriously. But if you start to see dragonflies around with little safety pins sticking out of the bottoms of them, you’ll know that got a bit friendlier than I had intended.
In any case, I still have not reached a conclusion over whether or not wearing a dragonfly pin works to keep other nasty biting insects at bay. But I’m still going to keep wearing it. There is at least one other dragonfly that will be disappointed if I don’t.
