Really, as a hockey fan of a certain age, it doesn’t get much better.
It’s a rare thing to see an original six matchup in the playoffs. Even more rare would be a Canadian original six matchup. And then you add in a game seven. It has all the makings of a classic.
I am probably one of the few who don’t have strong feelings either way. I have long thought of myself as a Leafs fan. I’ve even admitted it from time to time. But I have also never been a Habs hater. In fact, I have admired many of their players over the years.
Even during those times when Toronto seemed to be far more interested in working on their golf game from about January on, I would still support them. But it was never an “anyone but Montreal” type of fandom.
I liked both teams. Granted, over the years, Montreal seemed to have a better overall organization, and I admired them for it. They had some great players. But I was still hoping for the Leafs, even if it looked like they had no interest.
I have had a lot of favourite teams over the years, but it has always been with the knowledge that if the Leafs ever showed a sign of life I would support them. And there have been times I have even cheered on the Canadiens. They have had some good players and made a few good runs over the years.
It has been a while since these two have faced each other. Being one of those rare people who have found myself supporting both over the years makes it tough. But still, two teams with the history that these two have, facing each other, not just in the playoffs, but in a game seven, it should be a fun evening.
