The First of Two

I almost stayed home today. It’s Friday the 13th and a black cat crossed my path first thing this morning. Actually, two black cats crossed my path. Since they live there, it’s hard to avoid them. Although I don’t think there is any real connection between black cats and Friday the 13th.

We get at least one Friday the 13th each year, sometimes more. This year, we have two. The next isn’t until October.

I don’t really pay a lot of attention to superstitions. Some make sense, others don’t.

Like I do try to avoid walking under a ladder. If someone is up there, they could drop something on your head. Or you could knock them off. It’s one of those things that only makes sense.

Breaking a mirror could be bad luck, but only if you cut yourself picking up the glass. Or you go out with something stuck between your teeth because there was no mirror to check before you left home.

The number 13 doesn’t seem to be a big deal. I was married on a 13th. It was a Saturday, but it was still a 13th. And generally, it has worked out pretty good. Although my wife may have a different opinion, depending on the day.

And black cats? I have no problem with black cats. I have had a few black cats. The two that currently own the house I happen to live in seem pretty nice. As long as I have cream cheese.

I usually start my mornings with a bagel with a bit of cream cheese. The cats love cream cheese. They learned about rather early in their lives. And I am now learning to apply cream cheese to a bagel with two little black cat heads right in my way. They like to watch to make sure I get it done right. And to make sure I give them their share. They both have to get a little taste of cream cheese each morning. That’s how I earn my right to stay in their house. Well, that and cleaning their litter box.

So I don’t put much stock in superstitions. I’ve never found much to them. Unless I run out of cream cheese. Then black cats really could be bad luck.
