The Local Part of International Sports

Sarah Mitton of Brooklyn got her confirmation over the weekend. She will be going to Tokyo to compete for Canada at the Olympics.

This is something she has been working toward for years. Fifty-seven athletes were named to the team over the weekend. Some of them will be returning to the Olympics, others are doing it for the first time. Thankfully, they will get their chance. Due to the pandemic, there was some doubt for a while. Hopefully, everything works out.

Athletics is one of those things where you only have a fairly short window. You generally don’t stay at the top of your game for a long period of time. And a one year delay, like we have had with the Tokyo games, could be enough for some not to see their dream come true. Thankfully, that didn’t happen in this case.

It is not a common occurrence for people from this area to get to the Olympic level. It happens on rare occasions. I don’t know Sarah, but I do know this is something she has been working toward for quite some time, and I’m happy for her that she has managed to pull it off. It’s also really great to have someone from this area competing at an event of this level. Hopefully, we see more of it.

Hopefully she enjoys the experience. And we can all cheer on someone who’s from here.
