The No Sports Detox

I’ll admit it. I’m going through withdrawal. Olympic withdrawal.

I really wasn’t intending to spend a lot of time watching the Olympics, but time and weather conspired against me. I had two weeks off and a fair bit of cloudy, wet weather, so there was time spent indoors and the TV was on and people were running and throwing things and riding things and… well… I ended up watching a fair bit.

I won’t comment much on the many hours I spent checking throughout one day, trying to see Sarah Mitton. You don’t often have a local connection to an event like this, and I wanted to see the shot put. I don’t actually know Sarah, but there still is the connection being from the same place and all. So I tuned in early in the morning. And later in the day. And still later in the day. And even later.

Finally, there was a really short piece in the evening that showed her. After spending the day trying to see her compete, it almost felt like I had won a medal.

Other than that, I didn’t spend long hours watching. I caught bits and pieces here and there, but since it was always happening I did catch a fair amount of what was happening.

But now that it’s no longer happening, I’m a bit at loose ends. I kind of liked having different things popping up on TV. Things I hadn’t seen before. Things that were entertaining, but I could watch or not depending on the moment.

Now it’s not there.

And it’s not like they don’t have more they didn’t show. They made a big deal out of talking about a lot of the new sports that were added this time around. But they hardly showed any of them. I’m not really into skateboarding, but it would have been fun to see more of it. And there are many more I could put on the list. And if they have collected all the sports and just spread them out a bit, they probably could have made this last until September or longer.

So now I have to find other ways to pass the time. But I’m used to random sports just being there.

I knew I should have recorded that table tennis game to watch later.
