I’m usually a pretty careful shopper. I try not to spend more than I have to. Okay… maybe stingy would be a good description. Possibly even frugal.
But I splurged a bit last night. I stopped on the way home and picked up some local strawberries.
I make no secret of the fact I like fruit. I’ve always liked fruit, but it really got a bit out of control a couple years ago. When I was told I was diabetic I discovered that not all sugars were considered bad. Natural sugars were considered to be good for you. Which meant I could stuff my face with fruit and it would be good for me.
Yes, it’s not quite as simple as that. Some fruits are good, some not as good. You have to do a bit of research.
But the short version of all this is… I like fresh fruit.
And not all fruit is created equal. I tend to find the closer the fruit grows to you, the better it can be. Like with strawberries.
It’s not that I don’t eat strawberries that come from other places. There are some times of year I do. But I tend to believe that strawberries not grown in the immediate area seem to really put the “straw” in strawberry. The just don’t have the flavour.
So last evening, I stopped on my way home and picked up a couple boxes of strawberries. Local strawberries. They weren’t cheap. In fact, they were about double the price of imported berries I bought a couple weeks ago. But the thing is… they were worth it. They were by far more delicious and sweet than any strawberries I have had at least since last year.
To be honest… not all of them made it home. Somehow, about half a box of berries seemed to disappear along the way.
The biggest issue for these berries was that they seem to have a problem falling into my mouth.
But as I keep telling myself… they’re good for me. And I’m helping local farmers. And did I mention they are really freakin’ good?
