Things That Make Me Happy

There are a lot of little things out there that tend to make me happy. I don’t always go looking for them. They just appear and make me smile.

I’ve mentioned some. Like molting birds. I just happen to find bald blue jays and cardinals amusing. Usually they look pretty well put together. Very well dressed when you get down to it. Yet there are a couple weeks each year when some of them look really bad, which makes me smile.

Or the doe and fawn I watched romping along the shore of a lake last week. The fawn was having a great time, bouncing around all over the place. The doe looked like most of us do as parents. She had a look on her face like she couldn’t wait for hunting season to start. Although for most humans, it’s back to school time.

And there are many other things that just put a smile on my face.

Even little things. Like the smell and look of a freshly mowed lawn. I hate mowing a lawn. But I like the result.

And the sunflowers along the 103.

I have no idea who it planted them, or why. It’s not a huge field, but it is a pretty good size. Driving west you could go by and not really notice. Heading from Liverpool through Italy Cross it’s hard to miss.

This time of year, you suddenly come across a fair sized field filled with big yellow flowers. Hundreds of them. They just look so bright and sunny. I can’t help but smile when I see them.

I’m sure there are a number of birds and squirrels in the area who are pretty happy with the sight as well. It really is quite impressive.

Last year I noticed they had a step ladder at one end of the field. It certainly would give a great view of the flowers.

As I say, I don’t know who it is or why they did it, but just seeing all those sunflowers each day makes me smile. A little bit of sunshine along the side of the highway that can brighten even a cloudy day.
