I noticed an article yesterday about an aquatic invasive species they are currently having problems with around HRM, specifically in some of the lakes around Dartmouth. The story described floating yellow heart and said it should be reported. The thing is, the picture used was not floating yellow heart. It was a bullhead lily.
Most of us are probably familiar with the bullhead lily. They are the not so attractive water lily we have in these parts, but they are native. Apparently, they are also edible, although I’ve never tried one. The beavers seem to find them tasty. Or at least their roots.
So if you see an invasive species, by all means report it. But this just doesn’t happen to be one.
