Time To Prepare

The thought hit me last night. I really have to put my household emergency kit back together.

It’s not that I don’t have most of the bits and pieces. They’re just not all in one place.

This occurred to me as I walked by a hall table and noticed a flashlight sitting there. Wasn’t that flashlight part of the emergency supplies? I was pretty sure it was, but there have been a few visits by grandchildren since I last checked it. These things have a tendency to go for a walk if you don’t watch them. Children and grandchildren play with them. You don’t pay that much attention. They’re having fun and it’s doing no real harm.

Until you need those things.

We all should have things like a radio and flashlight. These should be solar or crank powered, so you don’t have to depend on batteries. Although I have a junk drawer full of enough batteries to power most of the house for a week. If they still work. Which is the reason you need the other kind.

There should also be a supply of water or a water filtration unit of some kind. A first aid kit. Preferably one that still has all the bits and pieces and hasn’t slowly been pilfered of anything useful over the years. Maybe some waterproof matches, enough non-perishable food products to get you through a few days, and things like can openers and ways to prepare said food.

I have all these things. At least, I used to. Many of them are scattered all over the house. I just have to gather them in one convenient location.

With Henri out there trying his best to turn into a hurricane, I started thinking about these sorts of things. We still have a few days to put these things together. Maybe even longer than that. You know how storms can be. One day they’re coming straight for you and the next they’re headed for Ireland. So who knows.

But it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.

Now… has anyone seen the band aids? I think I cut my finger of the multi tool in the emergency kit.
