You may have seen the meme that’s been making the rounds. When people say it’s too hot for coffee it just means they don’t understand coffee.
I’m not a huge coffee drinker, but I do want one in the morning. And I may like the occasional cup of tea in the afternoon as well. But is it ever “too hot” for such beverages?
Some may say yes. I was tempted to say it was too hot while sitting around this morning, sipping my coffee and feeling my hair sweat. At least it felt that way. The hot coffee and hot day combined to briefly make me feel very warm. Then there was a bit of a breeze and everything felt cool again.
This was something the British seemed to get. It was never too hot for tea. A nice hot cup of tea in the mid-day heat would help cool you down. And it does seem to work.
According to research, it works best in a dry heat. Good luck finding a dry heat in our climate. It also works best if you are sitting around naked. Or at least very lightly dressed. This is so the sweat that is produced by the hot beverage will quickly evaporate and make you feel cool.
Since very few of us have the luxury of sitting around naked in a dry heat, we have to make do with what we have. But it still seems to work. Along the same lines as spicy food. Again, it makes you sweat and the sweat evaporates and makes you feel cooler.
So hot drinks are actually really good on a hot day. It might seem like the wrong thing to do, but it really can work.
