I came to a conclusion over the weekend. We have too many clocks.
I’m not a huge fan of the time change. It doesn’t mess with me too much as it seems to with some people. I just find it annoying. Like when it comes to changing every clock in the house. And a few that aren’t.
So yesterday I got to spend a considerable amount of my day changing clocks. I really like the ones that do it on their own. They’re my favourite. They just know stuff and decide it’s time to switch to a different time. But we have so many more clocks. And I’m not sure why we have them.
We have several wall clocks. They’re not hard to change. You just take them down, possibly change the batteries if they have gotten to the point where the second hand can no longer make that long climb to the top of the 12. The second hand is just sitting there around the 52 mark, ticking away, trying to make some headway, but getting nowhere. For some reason I haven’t noticed the plight of the second hand, so the battery needs to be changed and the clock set at the proper time. Then you have to get the wall clock back to the little nail it came off of, except you can’t see the the little nail and spend several minutes blindly trying to hang the clock on the wall until you somehow, by some miracle, manage to get it in the tight place.
Then we have the clock radios, manage of which seem to have this demand that they be set to AM or PM but have no way to easily control the setting of the time so you always go too far and have to go around by 24 hours again before you get back to the right time and then… dammit I went 5 minutes too far… and you have to start again.
Or the microwave, and the oven and the several other appliances which all are demanding the correct time and all have slight differences in the way the time is actually set so you need an entire stack of instruction manuals.
And the car. Don’t forget the clock in the car.
Thankfully, I no longer have to worry about things like the VCR. That had long been retired so I don’t have to stare at the flashing wrong time, constantly telling me I don’t have it set correctly.
In my mind, that’s the worst part of the time change. Trying to figure out where all the clocks are in my life and change them all to the right time. I know I’ve missed one or two. But they’ll be back on the right time come November.
