Traffic is expected to move slower through Bridgewater over the next couple of months as construction is now underway on one of the town’s major river crossings.
Work on the Veterans Memorial Bridge began Monday, and the town says there’s already been a noticeable uptick in congestion in and around the area. The bridge spans the LaHave River and is one of the key routes linking the north and south ends of town.
The renewal project, led by the province, includes replacing the bridge’s expansion joints and undertaking deck and sidewalk repairs. Construction is expected to last up to 10 weeks, with completion targeted for early October.
During the work, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
No traffic control personnel will be present, but traffic lights on both ends of the bridge will continue to operate normally.
Motorists are being asked to allow for extra travel time—especially during peak periods—or consider alternate crossings like the Old Bridge, Cookville Bridge, or Highway 103.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project. At least one sidewalk will remain open at all times, with work beginning on the south side of the bridge.
