Transport Canada investigating after Russian airline disregards airspace ban

Transport Canada is launching a review after an airline violated the country’s ban on Russian flights entering its airspace.

The federal government announced on Sunday it was making the move as another sanction against the country for its invasion of Ukraine.

The step follows similar measures from other countries.

“We will hold Russia accountable for its unprovoked attacks against Ukraine,” Federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra Tweeted.

Transport Canada later confirmed Aeroflot flight 111 had disregarded the ban on the same day it was put into place.

The regulator says the review will also consider the actions of Canada’s air-traffic control service provider Nav Canada following the violation.

“We will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action and other measures to prevent future violations,” Transport Canada says in a Tweet.

Flight 111 travels from Miami to Moscow.

There are no direct flights between Russia and Canada, but several Russian flights pass through Canadian airspace to other countries daily.
