Walk To Support CF Research To Take Place Virtually

Supporting research into ending a fatal genetic disease is too important to put off so a fundraising walk will continue in its own way.

The Cystic Fibrosis Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History will take place virtually on May 31.

May is Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Awareness Month and this year marks the runs 16th year so organizers are asking people to do the walk in their own way, said Christine MacLean, Event Associate, Cystic Fibrosis Canada-Atlantic Region.

“We have one participant walking 65 kilometres during the month of May, there are others doing jumping jacks, and someone is even doing the chicken dance-it’s whatever people are looking to do in support of CF and CF Awareness Month,” she said.

In the Atlantic Region 220 people have registered for the walk which last year raised over $3 million for research and patient care.

People with CF are at very high risk from COVID-19 so it is important they follow social distancing and self-isolation to avoid contracting the virus says MacLean.

“6 feet (apart) is their normal, and people have been tying to help them out so they don’t need to be going out as much because obviously if they get it, it is a little bit more difficult for them to manage”.

Cystic Fibrosis Canada has been providing virtual support through information sharing and webinars.

2018 stats identified 375 people with the disease in the Maritimes, 244 of those in Nova Scotia.
