Was That A…

For the past couple days, I have been trying to figure it out. What was that laying by the side of the road?

The problem was, since this was along the 103, by the time I remembered to look I was pretty much past. But it didn’t look like the usual suspects.

If you drive along any of the roads in the province, you probably know what I mean. It’s not unusual to see the occasional porcupine or raccoon along the highway. Maybe the odd deer. Or a skunk. But there isn’t much trouble trying to identify those.

There was a period I saw quite a few groundhogs. At least more than usual. Strangely, that was just at the end of the winter of 2015. The winter it wouldn’t stop snowing. I was starting to think drivers were taking out their frustration on groundhogs for failing to predict an early spring.

But this looked different. Too small and too dark coloured for a deer. It looked like for more so than quills. And it seemed maybe a bit large and not quite the right colour for a raccoon. Honestly, it looked like a beaver.

Now there was a body of water fairly close, so it might have been. But I may never know for sure, since it seems to have left the area.

Since I drive the 103 on a fairly regular basis, you see some interesting things from time to time. I drove by a chainsaw sitting on the center line one day. Unusual place for one. And the usual collection of boots and shoes. Even the odd storage bin that must have been unloaded while trying to rearrange a vehicle and left behind.

Beavers are not something you normally see, which is why I was questioning what it was. It was one of those “no, it can’t be,” type of moments. Although I rarely have see them.

In fact there was one day I spotted a beaver, standing on the center line of the highway, cars zipping by in both directions, and it was up on it’s hind legs seemingly yelling at all the passing vehicles. It was not happy about something.

But while they seem to be more common to see along waterways, they still aren’t overly common on the road. I’m still not sure that’s what it was.
