While I’m totally clueless in the produce department, especially with picking a good avocado, somehow I do know my watermelons thanks to knowing someone who farmed them for years.
First, pick the “girl” watermelons. “Boy” watermelons are bigger, taller and more egg-shaped and are more watery. “Girl” watermelons are smaller, rounder and taste sweeter.
Second, look for the “field spot” where the melon rested on the ground. A white field spot means it’s not yet ripe. Yellow to yellow-orange is what to look for.
Third, check the stem, and make sure it’s dried out. A green stem means it was picked too soon and probably isn’t ripe.
Fourth thing to look for is the “web-like” brown spots. More is better because each one shows where a bee touched the flower to pollinate which makes the watermelon sweeter.
