WestJet has started cancelling flights ahead of possible job action by pilots on Friday.
The airline confirmed in a statement early Thursday that it had started “taking down its network.”
“This action ensures the airline can avoid abandoning aircraft in remote locations without support and enables the proactive communication with guests and crew to minimize the potential for being stranded,” said the statement.
The union representing more than 1,800 WestJet and Swoop pilots gave 72-hour strike notice this week.
In response, WestJet Group signalled its intent to lock out its pilots if a deal is not reached.
The airline will ground most of its 737 and 787 fleet in what it calls a “measured, phased and safe approach.”
WestJet Encore, WestJet Link, and limited 737 flights will continue operating during any job action.
Both WestJet and Swoop are offering flexible change and cancel options over the coming days.
