What About Sheila?

I keep looking, but I’m not seeing much of a sign of her. She usually shows up shortly after St. Patrick’s Day. It’s really supposed to be March 18th, but you can’t really count on her to be exactly on time.

I’m talking about Sheila’s brush.

The theory is, Sheila’s Brush is the last snow storm of winter. According to the legend, Sheila is somehow related to Patrick. She was his sister/ mother/ wife/ mistress/ snake herder… something like that. But she is supposed to show up, right after St. Patrick’s Day, swinging her brush and giving us a last blast of winter.

Then… it’s over.

I’m not big on old weather stories. But in this case, it’s surprising how often it works out.

Yes, we are also about to officially hit spring, which may have something to do with it. But is also a pretty common thing to have one last winter storm, whether it be a light dusting or an all out blizzard, fairly close to St. Patrick’s Day, and that’s the last one for the year.

This year, there’s not much of a brush to be seen in the forecast. Unless you count that little tiny bit of snow we got on St. Patrick’s Day itself. Then again, since we didn’t have much snow this winter, I guess we can’t expect much from Sheila.

In some ways, I find myself waiting for the proverbial other shoe. It usually happens. Folklore says it will happen. The forecast does not seem to agree.

Maybe Mother Nature figures we have enough to worry about this year.
