When To Plant

I managed to get a bit of my garden area at least turned over the other night. The weeds seem to be under the impression that they own it, but as usual, I plan to put up a bit of a fight. I probably won’t win, but if I can at least keep some of these things at bay for a couple months I might get a few veggies out of the ground.

There always seems to be something growing in my yard that I don’t want there. Some of it is my own fault. At one point, we planted a little bit of spearmint. Now we seem to have a lot of spearmint. It smells great when you mow it. And it does have its uses. It’s great in a mojito. But I don’t think I could drink enough mojitos to use it all.

I also have bugleweed. I really don’t mind the bugleweed, since it is mostly trying to take over the lawn. It has nice flowers and is fairly low, so if it succeeds in taking over the lawn I wouldn’t have to mow. So not all weeds are bad, I guess.

I could almost say the same about goutweed. But it seems to just want to take over everywhere. It seems to form this mat that covers pretty much everything and is pretty hard to get rid of. The best suggestion I’ve seen is to cover it with landscape cloth and leave it for a year or two to kill the goutweed. But I’m not getting many tomatoes that way. We could try a flamethrower. That could be quicker.

So we pull and hack and beat the stuff back far enough to get small garden in. We have beat other things into submission. This one will not win.

But the one thing I can’t fight back is the frost. It’s always an issue this time of year. When is it time to plant? When will we see the last of the frost?

In spite of the fact we have been having some fairly warm days, there are still warnings of possible frost at night. I haven’t actually seen any, but it could happen.

The full moon is coming up next week. That can often be a good indicator, but the past couple years it’s almost been mid-June before we get away from any risk of frost. So when to get those plants in becomes a bit of an issue.

Meantime, the weeds don’t seem to have the same issue with frost. They have been enjoying those warm days and seem to be growing like crazy. I’ll just keep up the fight. I will get my veggies.
