Who Could Be On Our New $5 Bill?

We have a new $5 bill in the works, and they have narrowed down the list on who could be featured on it. (Personally, I hardly use cash anymore, but I still think it’s really cool).

The Bank of Canada has announced it’s short list, and it’s now down to 8 possibilities. When it came to creating the list, the nominees needed to have enacted positive change, their impact must have been known across the nation and the person had to reflect Canadian values. They must be unique and known beyond their communities, and their impact must still be relevant today. They also had to have passed away, at least 25 years ago.

So who could be on the new $5 Bill?

It’s down to….

  • Terry Fox – Known for his 1981 Marathon of Hope, which helped to raise funds for cancer research.
  • Acclaimed Inuit artist Pitseolak Ashoona
  • French-Canada’s first-ever female journalist Robertine Barry (“Françoise”)
  • War hero and Indigenous rights advocate Binaaswi (Francis Pegahmagabow)
  • Won Alexander Cumyow, activist and first known Chinese-Canadian born in Canada
  • Lotta Hitschmanova, one of Canada’s earliest grassroots humanitarians
  • Leader of the Blackfoot Confederacy Isapo-muxika (Crowfoot)
  • Mohawk chief, activist, war veteran and author Onondeyoh (Frederick Ogilvie Loft)

Canada’s Minister of Finance will announce the next portrait subject of the $5 bank note “in early 2021.”
