Will Country Music Be The Next To Ban The “Rebel Flag?”

The other day as I was grocery shopping I had a guy call out my name to tell me “I’ve got a bone to pick with you!“… He wanted to voice how he was not pleased hearing a conversation Alicia and I had last week around the Confederate Flag. The conversation was around the fact that NASCAR has banned the “Rebel Flag” from the racing world.

Now the big question in the country music world is, will a ban of this symbol go further than the racetrack? Having grown up with the Dukes of Hazzard in Lunenburg County, I never thought of the flag as anything but a symbol of being a rebel, fast cars and out running the cops. Country music has a close association with this symbol. Bands like Alabama have been connected to it for their whole career and recently artists like Blake Shelton sing about it in their songs. But the debate about the use of this symbol in country music is nothing new. Five years ago a number of artists walked away from the controversial symbol to adopt the stars and stripes.

The way I see it is that now we know the meaning behind this symbol so now we no longer have the excuse of unknowingly being racist.
