The Town of Bridgewater announced on Tuesday that sometime within the past few days and for reasons unknown, an individual or individuals removed a large quantity of ribbons from hemlock trees that were marked as part of a research project.
The ribbons were placed on the trees by Nova Scotia Community College students last week to begin an inventory of the trees in the park. As part of the inventory, students measured the diameter of hemlock trees, made notes about each tree’s health, and looked for signs of the invasive Hemlock wooly adelgid.
Signage was present throughout the park indicating the purpose of the flags.
In a post on social media, the town indicated they were not looking to assign blame but rather want the community to be informed of the purpose of the ribbons so they are not removed again.
