A Bridgewater World War II Veteran has died.
Pierre Allain was known for his reading of Flanders Fields at Remembrance Day celebrations each year.
Friend Wayne Hunt says that wasn’t the only way Alain served the community.
“He’d show up at cadet events, he’d show up at hospital to take care of people,” he says. “He was always out and about.”
Hunt says Allain’s accent was strong and often made it hard to understand the stories he loved to tell.
He also spent time telling school children about his time helping with the French resistance.
When he was a teenager Allain risked his life ferrying escaped prisoners of war to safety.
Hunt says he will be sorely missed.
“He was a gentle person, very quiet. He was a remarkable man.”
A public legion tribute will be held this Saturday. Allain was 89 years old.
