Yeast – The New Toilet Paper

Okay… maybe not exactly toilet paper, but the latest thing people have been noticing a shortage of is yeast.

It is a difficult item for many stores to stock up on. You don’t want it sitting on your shelves for too long. Yeast does have a best before date. It stops working after a while, or at least doesn’t work as well.

But suddenly people have time on their hands and have started baking bread. Almost overnight the best thing since sliced bread is bread that hasn’t been sliced, but slowly kneaded by our own little hands. Or maybe people have been taking the time to check out their kitchen counters and suddenly discovered that big white thing in the corner was a bread maker that hadn’t been used for a while.

However it started, baking bread is now a thing. Yeast has become a hot commodity. Unless you have a secret stash of grandma’s sourdough starter hidden in the back of the fridge. Sourdough is a whole other thing. I haven’t tried that yet.

I have made bread, though. By hand. No machines involved.

The only thing is, if we all keep making delicious homemade bread, and let’s face it, there’s nothing better than fresh bread, we may want to hope summer is postponed. It will not be a good thing for our beach bodies… if you have such a thing. But it sure is good.
