You Can Actually Own These Unique Pets In Nova Scotia!

Most people have pets, dogs and cats are super popular but every now and again you hear of someone owning a more exotic animal like a snake or hedgehog! Well it doesn’t stop there. There are a surprising amount of animals out there that are technically allowed as pets in Nova Scotia!

The province has a full list HERE but here are a few of the animals that jumped out at me!

  • Pigeons and Doves

  • Partridges

  • Giant Salamanders

  • Alpacas and llamas

Now those are just a few of the many animals you can own in NS! The province also takes into consideration certain pets on a case by case basis to. The ones on the list above are the ones you can have without a permit!

Now before 1989 things were a different story! My grandfather and others have told me that pet monkeys were not an uncommon thing in Nova Scotia households. I’ve also heard of pet owls, crows and other wild animals. Those of course are all prohibited now for very good reason but do you remember anyone having any strange pets back in the day?

Remember wild animals deserve to be in the wild so keep them there it’s the law. If you find an injured wild animal contact the Department of Natural Resources or Hope For Wildlife at 902-407-9453 (WILD)
