Your School Lunches

When I went to school in the city we never stayed for lunch in Elementary and Junior High. We had 20 minutes to run home, 20 minutes for lunch, then 20 minutes to run back to school.

Grades 10 to 12 in high school were a different story – it was too far to get home, so we had a cafeteria. That didn’t serve food. Just a few vending machines for pop, chips and chocolate bars.

So we brown bagged it – we had to bring a sandwich. My go to sandwich was PB&J (this was before we knew about peanut allergies) but those got old really fast.

Halfway through the school year my mom discovered luncheon meat – Klik and Kam canned meats that were pretty cheap at the time.

Meanwhile my father introduced my brother and I to Coleman’s Hot Mustard. And a new favourite school lunch was created.

I used to love trading my sandwich with a friend who wanted to try mine. And then watching them run for the water fountain afterwards. Good times!

What was your school lunch fave?
