Queens General Hospital expanding emergency department hours

The emergency department at Queens General Hospital is about to have extended hours.

Nova Scotia Health says it is to provide more reliable access to care to the community.

Starting Saturday, March 1 the ER will be open 24 hours day from 8 a.m. Monday to 1:30 p.m., Friday.

It will then be closed from 1:30 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m., Monday.

The change increases the hours at the hospital’s emergency department from 35 to 101.5 hours every week.

The health authority says efforts are underway to recruit more staff so the emergency department can function seven days a week.

In the meantime, virtual care is available 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., every day.
